Sunday, August 14th, 2 pm: "The First One to Fall"

A presentation by Mitch Lutzke

In the midst of the "Roaring 1920s" and Prohibition the Michigan State Police began to establish themselves as a law enforcement unit. However, one March morning in 1921 the first MSP Trooper was shot and killed in the line of duty. The incident took place near Novi and when MSP set up a road block in downtown Williamston, things went badly. Police shot into a car, killing a man on his way to the REO Factory in Lansing. Over the next few days, a statewide manhunt ensued, while two Troopers were arrested for the Williamston incident and put on trial. There were efforts to abolish the State Police and the MSP officer's killers were never found. Find out more about this fascinating event in Michigan history at the Williamston Historical Museum at the Depot, on Sunday, August 14th at 2 pm.
